Designing homes that keep cool during heatwaves
Over the past couple of weeks, we have all experienced the effects of soaring temperatures in homes that are not designed for or capable of dealing with the heat.
Housing policy and design in Scotland and the UK have primarily focused on heating our homes, but we also need homes that remain comfortable during hotter summers and heat waves. At MAKAR our homes are designed to be comfortable all year round. High-performance building fabric and mechanical ventilation help keep them warm in winter and cool in summer.
When we filmed this video, it was 30°C outside, but just 20°C inside our Paradigm prototype.
The Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) system we use is a Nilan unit, fitted by Airchange: a single box, roughly the size of a large fridge, that both heats and cools the house, keeps the air fresh, and provides domestic hot water. Find out more about this process on our suppliers page.
